I WAS ONLY ACTING
Miss Vince, my second grade teacher
Told my mother during a parent-teacher conference
I acted as though I didn't like her

It was obvious who her favorite students were --
she treated them extra nice and smiled easily to their upturned faces

I wouldn't buy into that
-- No way --
Look at her with Cecilia
God, that's so typical
Who wants to be teacher's pet anyway?
Not me
Sometimes I would listen to a
worn-out Linda Ronstadt album
and imagine Miss Vince
sitting on the front steps of school
at night singing those songs while
cradling me in her arms with
a full moon above our heads
